Motivations
- If we want the average person to trust science, then the science has to be freely accessible.
- Whenever a government policy is said to be based on scientific knowledge, the public deserves the right to verify it.
Cost
- Academic journal websites could be kept up (ad-free) with probably just 1/1000th as much money as governments already allocate to research-grants.
- Text-based websites don't take much to maintain (unless there's code bloat).
