I had to comment out this map, even though it looks nice, because it doesn't show what needs to be shown.
It's not isochromic - it doesn't show equal red for equal deforestation. It over-emphasizes larger countries - so if a cluster of small countries were to add up to more deforestation than a big country, you wouldn't see it.
TODO: Create a proper isochromic map: For each country, divide its deforestation rate by its total land mass. The result should determine the shade of red to color the country.

Btw, one thing I like about the current map: It's "corrected for trade", so you get to see who's responsible for the carbon emissions. But that's a good idea for a separate map.

For this one, I'm just trying to find a map of "where is the world's deforestation happening" so we can get a better sense of the problem.

Forests removed to make way for agriculture

Deforestation (destruction of forests) is a type of habitat loss (an ecological harm).

Cattle ranching (pasture) is a main reason for rainforest deforestation

Causes

Forests are typically cleared to make room for agriculture (especially animal agriculture) which needs a lot of land.

Effects

  • Endangered species go extinct.
  • Carbon is released into the atmosphere (climate change).

Solutions

Reducing the amount of land needed for food:

  • Tree farming for wood production - surprisingly not a significant contributor to deforestation.
  • Old growth forests - the most important forests to protect
  • Hunger - Solving global hunger should not be pitted against solving deforestation.
