Suppose all vehicles were a certain type, how much energy would be needed worldwide?
| Vehicle type | Powering the vehicles | Manufacturing the vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| Battery electric vehicles | 1.08 terawatts | Status quo + 0.15 terawatts |
| Fuel cell vehicles | 2.30 terawatts | unknown |
| Status quo, for comparison (fossil fuel vehicles, mostly) |
3.38 terawatts equivalent fuel energy consumption |
unknown |
- Wattages are total energy consumption divided by time. Not peak power.
A mix of vehicle types is a likely scenario - so expect the wattage to be somewhere in between.
Rooftop solar could provide more than enough energy for this, but only if there's a solution to solar/challenge 1.
The numbers come from: Calc:If all vehicles were electric
