The causes of hunger can be understood from both a material perspective and a socioeconomic perspective, which are two sides of the same coin:
Inefficiencies
Even though farms produce more than enough food crops to feed the world, too many of these crops are used inefficiently...
- as animal feed (farm animals eat more food than they produce)
- as biofuel (burned for energy - this is not a scalable alternative to fossil fuels)
- and in food that goes to waste (or spoils due to improper storage)
As a result, there isn't enough to go around (globally). The poorest of the poor are the first to suffer from this. discussion Where should we link to pages that are more specific examples of this, by country?
