Fresh air vs efficient heating

From the change wiki

In the winter, it can be hard to get fresh air in the house without wasting a lot of heat. Here are some ideas:

  • Don't open the window "just a crack". Instead, open all the windows at once for just a few minutes, let the air flow through, and then close them completely. This gives you the most bang for your buck - the most air for the least cold.  discussionTODO: Discuss the physics of why this works - in fact, maybe we still need to do more research first to see whether it actually does.
  • Let's invent a "portable heat exchanger" that can connect to the window, pumping in fresh air that first gets warmed by the stale air. [new page needed]
  • Discussion: Environmental impact of air fresheners vs opening the window in the winter to get rid of smells
