Abolish homework
Why
- Kids already go to school full time. That should be more than enough learning, if the curriculum is designed correctly.
- Kids need a healthy separation between work and play. Homework erodes this boundary and encroaches on all areas of life.
- Kids would be happier & healthier with more free time (as long as it doesn't all get spent scrolling, of course).
Caveats
We need to make sure the increased free time doesn't all become screen time:
- The internet needs to be less addictive.
- See relevant discussion: Design a social media platform that isn't unhealthy
- Either way, if kids are going to spend a lot of time on phones & tablets, we should at least save them from getting bad posture and bad eyes.
- We need to find ways to make screens ergonomic.
- It would also help if kids had more places to play outside.
- Make neighborhoods walkable?
