Nearly every food crop has some parts that are too fibrous for people to eat. These are called crop residues.

Examples

  • banana leaves & peels
  • peanut shells
  • coconut shells
  • empty corn cobs with no kernels
  • rice husks
  • sunflower seed husks
  • straw

Uses

  1. All crop residues can be burned as fuel.
  2. Some kinds of crop residue can be converted into packaging.
  3. Some kinds of crop residue can be fed to ruminants (cows, sheep, goats).
  4. Some kinds of crop residue can be used for cultivating mushrooms - more efficient than ruminants, when it comes to converting fiber into protein.
  5. If there's no other use, crop residues can be composted back into the soil.
