Food waste in rich developed countries, contributes to hunger in much poorer countries.

  • Food waste shrinks the global food supply, which raises food prices. The poorest of the poor are the first to suffer.  discussionTODO: illustrate examples: Net food exporter country vs net food importer country: Food wasted in either one has effectively the same net effect on the world

Why this is important to know

  • Debunk the old "Who cares if we waste food, we have a surplus!"
  • Understand that it's not enough to simply redirect food to feed the local poor in first-world countries - it's a good start, but there's far more food going to waste than that.
