Universal basic housing/Standards
(Redirected from Basic housing)
What kinds of housing would be suitable for universal basic housing? People have diverse needs, and we need to think about how those needs could be met in a low-cost way.
Ideas so far
For people who want to live alone
A studio apartment:
- i.e. A home that is a single room with a bed and kitchen, plus a bathroom
- Furnished with at least a table, chair, and shelves/drawers to store things

TALK: What about people who have a mental/physical illness that makes them unable to live alone or with housemates in the conventional sense? Ideas / discussion needed here.
General - things that residential buildings need
- A common room.
- See discussion: How to design housing that doesn't promote loneliness
- Basic utilities (water, electricity, internet, heating/cooling)(in case that's not obvious)
- Be maintained enough to be livable
- Basic repairs as needed so that doors, windows, utilities etc. can function properly.
- No expensive cosmetic renovations.
- If new construction, should have some character. There's no need for all the housing to look the same.
- See discussion on possible aesthetics
- There should be different buildings with different standards regarding cleanliness, noise, etc.
- Because by planning for diverse needs, tenants can live the way they want without ruining it for other tenants.
