How much short-term energy storage for solar?

Suppose we use batteries to smooth out the day/night cycle of solar - how much battery capacity might we need, say, for an house where electricity consumption is comparable to the average person in a first-world country, and all of it should come from solar? And how much more battery capacity would we need if we want to withstand some cloudy days?
