This is a page to estimate the bare minimum amount of resources it takes to sustain a decent quality of housing.

Case study

Specs

  • 1 studio apartment per capita
  • everything in working condition (good plumbing, good wiring, no chipping lead paint, no readily-inhaled asbestos)
  • no cosmetic renovations
  • the building must have common space (because fuck anyone who wants to create a lonely dystopia)

Things to estimate

  • Labor & environmental footprint of:
    • Constructing the building, per capita, divided by the building's max lifespan (because fuck anyone who wants to demolish it prematurely)
    • Maintaining the building (i.e. the "everything in working condition" requirement above)
    • Providing utilities (water, electricity, internet, heating, cooling)
