What could provide enough seasonal energy storage?
To smooth out the year-round fluctuations of wind & solar, we'll need a lot of energy storage. Far more than what it would take to just smooth out the day-night cycle. What energy storage type might be suitable?
Analysis needed
We need to compare different types of energy storage, based on the following factors:
- Materials per unit of energy stored
- Consider the scarcity of minerals involved
- For each mineral, quantify it relative to global reserves, global resources, and status-quo global production
- Consider the scarcity of minerals involved
- EROI
- Consider both the energy to build the storage system, and the losses in charging/storage/discharging
Analysis
This section has not been filled in yet.
Pages to develop
- EROI of hydrogen production and combustion
- EROI of hydrogen production and fuel cell use
- Hydrogen storage - subpages for different types. for each type, quantify:
- additional losses not factored into the above EROIs.
- materials per unit of energy stored
- likewise for batteries, gravity batteries, compressed air, what else?
- pumped hydro#land requirements
Maybe this should be moved to the energy storage page. Its table would be a good place to put the links listed above.
